The route
The big one. This is the tour that takes everything the western Balkans do well and strings it into twelve days: lakes, gorges, coastal roads, high mountains and three of the most beautiful small cities in Europe. You ride out through North Macedonia and Albania, climb through Montenegro, hug the Croatian coast, loop through Slovenia and come home through Serbia.
Suggested by StayToRide member Giannis Tkd. Three legs of this tour have their own dedicated pages, Kotor & Lovcen, the Durmitor Ring and the Albanian Alps Loop, if you want to deep-dive any single section. This is the full itinerary that joins them all.

Works with Garmin, TomTom, BMW Navigator, Calimoto, Kurviger, komoot, MyRouteApp. Import as a track to ride the exact line. Road data from OpenStreetMap (ODbL); elevation from SRTM.
Track vs. route, how to load this into your GPS
What you are downloading is a GPX track, a dense, road-snapped breadcrumb of the exact line, with elevation on every point. It is not a GPX route (a short list of turn waypoints your device re-plans between). Tracks preserve our road choice; routes let the device pick its own way and can send you down a boring motorway shortcut.
How to use it on your navigator:
- BMW Navigator / Garmin Zumo / zumo XT: import as a track, then Convert to Route (or Trip Planner, new trip from track) if you want turn by turn prompts. Keep Recalculation off so it stays on our line.
- TomTom Rider: import the GPX in MyDrive, it loads as a track / itinerary. Enable Follow the exact route so it does not re-plan.
- Calimoto: open the GPX and choose Import as tour, Calimoto follows the track line.
- Kurviger / komoot / MyRouteApp: open the GPX and pick Import as track to keep the road choice. Only choose Import as route if you want the app to re-plan for your bike profile.
- Google Maps / Apple Maps: these do not read GPX. Use the map on this page for turn cues, or import the file into a GPX capable app first.
Rule of thumb: if your device asks "track or route?", pick track to ride our exact line, pick route only if you want the device to re-plan.
Elevation profile
From ~-4 m at the base to 1,720 m at the top, 18,031 m of total climbing across the route.
Days 1-3: Thessaloniki to Ohrid, then Albania. Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world and the calmest possible first night. The run north through Shkoder sets up the border crossing into Montenegro and the descent into the Bay of Kotor, the southernmost fjord in Europe and the single most photographed bend on the site.
Days 4-6: Montenegro and Bosnia. From Kotor the road climbs into the Durmitor massif around Zabljak, the highest village in the Balkans, then drops to Mostar for the bridge and the bazaar, and on to Dubrovnik. These are the strongest riding days of the tour: empty, twisty and huge.
Days 7-9: the Dalmatian coast. Dubrovnik to Split to Zadar on the Jadranska Magistrala, the Adriatic coastal road, then inland to the waterfalls of Plitvice and the cafes of Zagreb. Days 10-11: Ljubljana and Trieste, two of Europe's most liveable small cities, before the homeward leg through Belgrade, Nis and Skopje on day 12.
The road, honestly
The Montenegrin and Bosnian sections are the best riding and the roughest surfaces. The Magistrala is beautiful and busy in summer, with tour buses that own the corners, so ride it early. The Serbian leg home is mostly fast transit and the least interesting day, budget it as such.
Borders: North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Serbia are not in the EU. You need your green card insurance papers, and queues in August can cost an hour each. The total is six border crossings; plan them for mornings.
When to go
April to October, with May-June and September ideal. July-August works but the Croatian coast is at its most crowded and Dubrovnik at its most expensive. Durmitor holds snow into May and can be properly cold at any time, so pack a layer even in August.
Fuel, money and documents
Fuel is frequent everywhere and cheapest in Serbia and North Macedonia. Cards work in Croatia and Slovenia; carry cash (euros are accepted almost everywhere) for the rest. Beyond the green card, an international driving permit is recommended for Albania and Bosnia, and every country on this route requires your passport, not just an ID card.
What to see along the way
- Lake Ohrid - One of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, with a UNESCO old town on its shore.
- Bay of Kotor - The southernmost fjord in Europe, with the serpentine road above it as the reward.
- Durmitor National Park - High plateau of peaks and glacial lakes around Zabljak, the roof of Montenegro.
- Plitvice Lakes - Sixteen terraced lakes joined by waterfalls, half a day off the bike well spent.
- Ljubljana - Car-free old town on a river under a castle, the best coffee stop of the tour.
