Peloponnese Grand Tour, ten days around southern Greece

1,106 kilometres, 11,373 metres of climbing and ten unhurried days. A rider sent us this one and it is the best summary of the Peloponnese we have seen: swim in the morning, cross a mountain in the afternoon, sleep in a tower village. Full route on the map, a GPX for your GPS, and the motorcycle-friendly stays other riders have vetted along the way.

The route

This is the whole peninsula in one loop, suggested by a rider who clearly rides it often. Patras and the Ionian coast down to Pyrgos and Zacharo for the beaches, Kalamata and the Taygetos crossing to Sparta, the full Mani circuit with Cape Tainaron and Porto Kagio, the Elafonisos ferry for Simos beach, Byzantine Monemvasia, then the twisty east coast through Kyparissi, Kosmas and Leonidio before Nafplio, Porto Heli, Epidaurus and Corinth.

Ten days is right. You can compress it into six, but you will be riding past the reason you came. Pins on the map are motorcycle-friendly stays other riders have vetted within reach of the route. If you only have a long weekend, ride the Mani Peninsula loop instead, which is the southern third of this trip on its own.

Works with Garmin, TomTom, BMW Navigator, Calimoto, Kurviger, komoot, MyRouteApp. Import as a track to ride the exact line. Road data from OpenStreetMap (ODbL); elevation from SRTM.

Track vs. route, how to load this into your GPS

What you are downloading is a GPX track, a dense, road-snapped breadcrumb of the exact line, with elevation on every point. It is not a GPX route (a short list of turn waypoints your device re-plans between). Tracks preserve our road choice; routes let the device pick its own way and can send you down a boring motorway shortcut.

How to use it on your navigator:

  • BMW Navigator / Garmin Zumo / zumo XT: import as a track, then Convert to Route (or Trip Planner, new trip from track) if you want turn by turn prompts. Keep Recalculation off so it stays on our line.
  • TomTom Rider: import the GPX in MyDrive, it loads as a track / itinerary. Enable Follow the exact route so it does not re-plan.
  • Calimoto: open the GPX and choose Import as tour, Calimoto follows the track line.
  • Kurviger / komoot / MyRouteApp: open the GPX and pick Import as track to keep the road choice. Only choose Import as route if you want the app to re-plan for your bike profile.
  • Google Maps / Apple Maps: these do not read GPX. Use the map on this page for turn cues, or import the file into a GPX capable app first.

Rule of thumb: if your device asks "track or route?", pick track to ride our exact line, pick route only if you want the device to re-plan.

Day 1 Patras to Zacharo along the coast, with the first swim of the trip. Day 2 Zacharo to Kalamata by Kyparissia and Pylos. Day 3 Kalamata over Taygetos through the Langada gorge to Sparta, the highest point of the whole loop at 1,317 m. Day 4 Sparta down to Gythio and Areopoli. Day 5 is the Mani circuit: Gerolimenas, the walk to the Tainaron lighthouse, the necromanteion at Kokkinogia, an ouzo at Porto Kagio, then Kotronas and the east Mani coast back north.

Day 6 Gythio to Viglafia and the short ferry to Elafonisos for Simos beach. Day 7 back over to the mainland and up to Monemvasia. Day 8 is the riding day everyone remembers: the coast road to Kyparissi, the climb to Kosmas and the drop into Leonidio. Day 9 Leonidio to Nafplio and out to Porto Heli. Day 10 Porto Heli to Epidaurus, then Corinth and the motorway home. The GPX is the full loop and it breaks cleanly at any of those towns.

The road, honestly

The Ionian side is easy, fast and mostly flat, so treat days 1 and 2 as transport with beaches attached. Everything changes at Kalamata. The Langada gorge over Taygetos is a proper mountain road with good surface, blind rock walls and very little traffic outside August, and it is the single best hour on the western half of the trip.

The Mani is slower than the map suggests. Narrow lanes between stone towers, gravel washed across the tarmac after rain, goats on every blind bend. The last kilometres to Cape Tainaron are unpaved and then it is a 40 minute walk to the lighthouse, so plan for it rather than turning around annoyed.

Day 8 is the payoff. Monemvasia to Kyparissi is a cliff road with almost no traffic, the section on towards Fokianos turns rough and is best treated as an optional out and back unless you are on an adventure bike, and the climb from the coast up to Kosmas and back down to Leonidio is one of the finest stretches of asphalt in Greece. Take it slowly, the surface changes without warning.

When to go, weather and ferries

May, June, September and early October are ideal: warm sea, empty roads and bearable riding gear temperatures. July and August work if you start at first light, but the Peloponnese regularly sits above 38 degrees inland and the Elafonisos ferry queues get long with cars.

The Elafonisos crossing runs from Pounta near Viglafia and takes about 10 minutes, with departures roughly every half hour in season and a small fee for a motorcycle. Check the last return of the day before you leave the bike on the island. Winter is rideable at sea level, but Taygetos and Kosmas can hold ice and fog.

Fuel, food and where to base yourself

Fill up in Kalamata, Gythio, Areopoli, Neapoli and Leonidio. Inner Mani and the Kyparissi coast road have long gaps with no fuel and few tavernas open outside the summer season, so do not run into reserve on those stretches.

Good overnight anchors are Zacharo or Kyparissia, Kalamata, Sparta or Gythio, Areopoli for two nights while you ride the Mani, Elafonisos or Neapoli, Monemvasia, Leonidio, Nafplio and Porto Heli. Booking ahead matters in Monemvasia, Elafonisos and Nafplio in high season, the rest of the loop is relaxed.

What to see along the way

  • Zacharo and Kaiafas - Long empty sand backed by pine forest, an easy first swim an hour south of Pyrgos.
  • Langada gorge, Taygetos - The Kalamata to Sparta crossing. Highest point of the loop at 1,317 m, cold springs and a taverna near the top.
  • Areopoli - Stone capital of the Mani. Cobbled square, towers, and the natural base for the peninsula circuit.
  • Cape Tainaron lighthouse - The southern tip of mainland Greece. Dirt track to the car park, then a 40 minute walk over the old Roman mosaics to the lighthouse.
  • Necromanteion, Kokkinogia - The ancient gate to the underworld above the Tainaron shore. Small, strange and worth the stop.
  • Porto Kagio - The old pirate harbour on the east side of the cape. Fish tavernas on the water, the classic ouzo stop of the trip.
  • Simos beach, Elafonisos - Twin bays of white sand and turquoise water, reached by the short ferry from Pounta. Reckoned by many riders to be the best beach in Greece.
  • Monemvasia - Byzantine town hidden on the seaward side of a rock. Park outside the gate, walk in, stay the night.
  • Kyparissi - Fishing village at the end of a cliff road that most tourists never find. Climbing crags above, clear water below.
  • Kosmas to Leonidio - Plane trees and a mountain square at Kosmas, then the drop through the Parnon gorges to the red rock wall above Leonidio.
  • Epidaurus theatre - The best preserved ancient theatre in Greece, and the twisty inland approach from Porto Heli is half the reason to go.
